Being a responsible business provides the foundation for sustainability, innovation and productivity, because it establishes a culture which has the required mindset. But what constitutes a responsible company and who it is responsible to? Is it the role of government or companies to take the lead. Is The Responsible Business as the norm going to come about by regulation/legislation or discretionary effort?
Can companies have separate strategies and targets for P&L and ESG? Is there a potential problem that investment horizons and profit expectations don’t approximate the timescales relating to the problems the planet and society face? Arguably the influence of the new generation means companies have to demonstrate what they stand for, to be genuine and authentic.
